Project Description

SIG plc – Sheffield

SIG, leading distributor of specialist building products in Europe, selected Be Inspired Design to help support their move into their New Build HQ

The Brief

SIG had made the business decision to relocate colleagues to a new purpose-built office on Sheffield Business Park.

Be Inspired Design began work with the property department in 2016 to review the current business needs and create a strategy for the relocation and design of the interior of the new building.

Our first task was to review how their existing office environments worked for the business and their requirements, as well as understanding their day-to-day departmental needs. The critical adjacencies were identified, and a strategy agreed.

Over a two year period and after extensive work with the business, the decision was made to move to a new way of working for all colleagues based in the new head office

The New Way of Working

The new building will have no desk ownership.  Desk will be bookable on a daily basis and moving around the building will be encouraged, to improve integration.

Every member of staff will be equipped with a laptop and the building is fully wi-fi enabled. They can work anywhere within the building.

The desk, monitor arms and task chairs are easy to adjust, suiting personal requirements on a daily basis, and the IT solution has been designed and integrated to support a fully roaming work force.

The Design

Our design has supported the business aims and needs to achieve a functional, yet considered interior for the business, working from a single building. Desks are 1400mm wide to create more space for a variety of collaborative settings. Within the work space, departments are allocated zones, however there is no personal desk ownership. The environment is completely open plan with the supporting settings such as quiet individual focus booths, collaborative high back sofa’s and high-level touch down tables carefully placed to encourage staff collaboration away from their desk, to reduce noise and distraction.

Personal lockers and departmental storage are scattered throughout the space on main circulation routes, providing easy access.

SIG began moving into the building in June 2018 and we continue to work with them to support them in the transition. We hope that the space designed, provides an exciting new way of working and meets their daily business needs.

Reflecting the Brand

The brand has been referenced throughout the design with SIG’s ‘Stronger Together’ colour scheme being used to inject fresh and vibrant colours into the space. SIG were keen to move away from their traditional image and create a fresh, engaging interior. The colours have been used throughout, from feature carpets to vibrant wall colours and bright furnishings.

A place for the whole team

Creating a social hub for the business was an important element of the brief. The Sheffield Business Park is isolated and providing a good food offering was critical. The ground floor restaurant is supported by an external caterer, Mellors Catering of Sheffield who provide subsidised hot and cold food. The space is intended to allow colleagues time away from their desks to refresh and recharge, but also to integrate, socialise and collaborate.

The restaurant is at the heart of the building, immediately behind the reception – providing a welcoming space for visitors and informal meetings. The atrium connects the ground and first floor and allows the vibrancy of the restaurant to subtly filter onto the first floor workspace.

Colleagues are able to work from any of the meeting rooms, breakout spaces and even the restaurant, due to the office’s enabling technology.

SIG has invested in a number of height adjustable desks across all three floors to support colleagues and their personal well-being.
